Question about English (US)

Does midnight only refer to a specific time?

Does midnight never have a meaning like "late at night" or "in the middle of the night"? Lots of English-Japanese dictionaries say midnight means mayonaka (真夜中) which doesn't mean a specific time, but all the English-English ones I have say midnight means 12 o'clock at night. I have been confused for a long time.
