Is this sentence correct? “There are a lot of palm trees”.
Can I also use “there is” here? Feel like I hear more often “there is” than “there are” even though people are talking about several things.

It is correct, and it'd be grammatically incorrect the use of there is because you're talking about something plural.
Maybe sometimes in the oral language you can notice people using the singular for something plural, but it's always best to use the proper form, orally and written.
