It means to do something in a very cheerful or lively way.
For example: You could tell by his jaunty walk down the street that he was having a very good day.
It is a very rare word in speech, in the US. You are most likely to see it in classic literature. Older books, etc at least 50 years ago would be my best guess. It's been rare my whole life and I'm 51.
