Do some Chinese drink coffee with soy milk?
In Western countries it's very common to have soy milk instead of cow's milk in your coffee, however my roommate from China told me she had never heard of this and Chinese cafes only serve cow's milk in their coffees because soy milk is more commonly drunk on its own. Is this true?

Our soy milk is a little different from yours. You can try to drink Chinese soy milk in some Chinese restaurant or maybe your roommate can make it for you at home. This small appliance can make soy milk

I live in Italy and here some bar serve soy milk cappuccino but in China I didn't notice any. Our soy milk tastes thicker than western soy milk. I wonder what your soy milk is made of. Just soybeans and water?

I drink soy milk matcha latte, although it's not coffee. At Starbucks in China we can ask for soy milk instead of milk.

I love soy milk! We can make it at home (especially in the summer), but I've never poured the (Chinese) soy milk version in my coffee. Only milk or almond milk and... I drink tea sometimes. It depends from time to time but I'd put almond milk in my tea rather than normal milk.

@molto1227 Sometimes other ingredients are added like calcium, as many people drink it as a replacement for cow milk (diet/medical reasons). I'm surprised it's less common over there because people in Asia are usually lactose intolerant right?

coffee is not so popular in China, a few companies have coffee machines, coffee shop is unusual around, someone drink constant coffee. we prefer to tea daily.

@meowie Actually the first time I heard the word "lactose intolerant" is in tv show the Big Bang Theory. I always thought westerns are more lactose intolerant😂 I also noticed that there are restaurants and bakery sell products without gluten. In China we merely have one. Or the percentage is too low that I haven't noticed any.

not many people drink coffees like that. but if you go to a starbucks sotre in China and ask to use soy milk intead of milk, the staff can do it for you. I live in Shanghai and more and more coffee shops now can do it if you ask. I'm not sure other areas in China

@molto1227 That's interesting because usually it is Westerners who traditionally drink cows milk, as northern Europe has a cold climate and less sunlight therefore cows milk was traditionally consumed as it contains vitamins that the body will naturally produce when exposed to sunlight. I thought Asian countries generally only drank animals' milk after it was introduced by Westerners but I suppose this isn't true?

@meowie Yeah you're totally right! Asians haven't had the habit of drinking milk until recent years. Just know I did a research online, there's articles about why almost 90 percent of Chinese are lactose intolerant. Among three types of lactose intolerant, Chinese belong to the type that because we don't have a habit of drinking cow milk, or lack of consumption of lactose in our diet during growing up, so that the enzymes tend to "lose their jobs". As a result when we drink milk the enzymes don't function well.
And there's evidence that it's true that asians are more lactose intolerant than westerners.

@meowie However when we talk about milk in coffee. I suppose that since coffee is from western, the milk that being added into it should be western as well😂 And our Chinese soy milk is too thick to add to the coffee. But as others' answers here, Starbucks in China also serve as demanded. Maybe it's also influenced by western? Haha anyway, I'll definitely try it out next time!

@meowie Ever since before the arrival of Westerners, some East Asian groups do consume dairy products. For examples, the Tibetans of Xizang and Qinghai drink yak's milk, the Mongols in the north drink mare's milk, and the Kirghiz, Hui, Uighur and other ethnic groups of Shaanxi, Ningxia, Xinjiang and Gansu drink sheep's milk.
