Yes. I think in that case it would be that the auctioneer would auction something.
It may also just be that adding 'off' is a language shift that doesn't change the meaning and is just one of those slang formats.

From my understanding, an 'auction' is the physical thing.
"I am going to an auction."
When someone is giving something to an auction or auctioning something, it is called 'auction off'.
"Michael Caine is set to auction off a number of items..."
