"American Pie" is a popular comedy movie from 1999.

It was a hugely popular franchise of American comedy films from about 20 years ago.
Before that, it was an extremely well-known song by a singer called Don McLean. Absolutely everybody knows that song. It’s kind of a love letter song to American culture.
So – the idea of American pie is that there is something intrinsically awesome about American culture, although in the comedy movies they kind of turn that into… something naughty….

I never saw the movie - i was having my son at the time, so i know it came out in July 1999.
I'm very familiar with the song though! by Don McClean. you can pull it up on You Tube. it refers to the time when a plane crash killed some VERY big names in american music (pre "british invasion") (aka 'The Day the Music Died), and has other cultural references about life in that time, and how the world was changing.
