Is the surname Smith particularly popular among black people? And why?

The only Smiths I know are Will Smith and his family members. So I don’t think it’s very popular. However if it is popular amongst African Americans it may be a name that was their slaveowners surname, because I think that many African Americans adopted their slaveowners surnames, in fact Creoles had French surnames because they were enslaved by the French.
