It's not required, and it's actually wrong. If you omit the "for", the sentence is correct.

Well, I guess you could say it like that, but the emphasis is different. When you grab something, the emphasis is on holding it firmly in your hand. When you grab for something, the emphasis is more on the act of reaching toward it.
