I misunderstood because it released intense smell. Does this sound natural?

I misunderstoodmistakenly thought so because it released an intense smell.
I misunderstoodmistakenly thought so because it released an intense smell.
There was nothing to understand about it, so you can’t misunderstand. Try using something like refers to a mistake. Also if you didn’t open the mustard I would recommend going with ‘it has an intense smell’ but if you actually opened it say released. Yes, released would work either way it just makes more sense.
