I am currently teaching myself Hiragana and Katakana. I do not know much grammar for the Japanese language and for Kanji which I will come to eventually, is its purpose to shorten words?

Yeah you can say one of the purpose of kanji is to shorten words, but moreover, kanji can distinguish homonyms. For example, there are (at least) three words for the pronunciation "kanji".
漢字: Chinese characters
感じ: feeling
幹事: an organizer of an event
All these words have the same hiragana and katakana, so kanji is really helpful for readers to know the correct meaning. There are so many homonyms in Japanese like this. Good luck!
