Germany has a lot of Christian holidays and depending on which Bundesland you're in, it can be more or fewer holidays (Bavaria has the most holidays)
Most of our holidays are not celebrated by many, we're just happy to have a day off.
School children (at least in Bavaria, I'm not sure about the other Bundesländer) have a total of 6 holiday periods that are 14 weeks long (combined):
Summer vacation, Reformation (Halloween), Christmas vacation, Fasching (Carnival, but officially called "Winter vacation", whatever), Easter vacation and Pentecost vacation (no German kid knows what that last one is about haha)
Very popular are the Easter holidays and Christmas, as well as New Year's Eve.
A German-specific holiday is "Tag der Arbeit" (= "work day", how ironic) on May 1st, which celebrates the working class. It's also celebrated in all German speaking neighboring countries, although I hear that many other states around the world celebrate it as well, but not always as a national holiday.
Very important (perhaps most important when talking about German-specific holidays) is the "Tag der deutschen Einheit" (= "re-unification day") on October 3rd that celebrates the 1990 unification of Western and Eastern Germany.
International Women's Day is a holiday only in the capital Berlin, and Children's Day is a holiday in Thuringia.
