Those mean the same thing, but "couldn't go" is usually more casual than "wasn't able to go".

Well they can mean exactly the same thing. There is a slight nuance and jelly turkey is right about the formality

I think the difference with that example is that it is not negative, as "we ran fast but couldn't catch the bus" is correct. Either way, if you are talking to someone and use either one, it will sound natural. :)
