yes, they are the same. in investment related fields, smurfing is defined as the deposit of illegally gained money (dirty money, in a sense) into bank accounts (with the intent of not getting caught), and someone who smurfs is a money launderer who aims to evade the government by breaking up that money into smaller transactions.
however, the recent generations may not recognize smurfing in a money laundering sense; they'll recognize it as a gaming term. smurfing in gaming refers to someone making a second account to play against lower ranked players. if you told them about smurfing in a laundering sense, they would probably be very confused - so it would be easier to refer to it as laundering around them.
