What language is spoken in Ukraine? I mean, in what language people speak with their family indoors? in what language news are written or spoke in tv? Russian, or Ukrainian?

People speak whatever language they like better. Although it depends on city. For example, Kiev is only about 30% Ukrainian speaking, while Lyviv is much more.
Official media, advertisement, documents etc. are supposed to be on Ukrainian. And, most of the time, they really are exactly like that.

In the West abd the Central Ukraine people speak ukrainian. In the East Ukraine people speak fifty fifty ukrainian and russian

@yarovashka LOL its the same thing in Brasil, where our neighbors speak Spanish, and we understand them, but they do not understand us when we speak Portuguese ;D

@deavellar10 if you wanna live in Ukraine, better to learn Ukrainian. If you want just to travel, make friends, better Russian, because you will able to communicate not only with Ukrainians

@deavellar10 we understand Russian because we know it because we are exposed to it, but actually it is not so similar as you may think. Spanish and Portuguese are much closer.

Really, in towns-centers of region like 15/23 town's inhabitants speak Russian. Ukrainian is usually spoken in small cities and villages, but inhabitants there often combine Russian, Ukrainian and Poland (sometimes) languages. Minimum in Odessa all (~99,9%) people who were born here speak Russian. Also, I think that it's not so hard for Russian to understand Ukrainian.

There is some dialect in Ukraine, calls Surzhyk. It is like mixed language. It includes words from Russian and Ukrainian languages. People from villages and towns communicate with each other by Surzhyk (about 11-18% of population)
