a muse is something that inspires, and it is a word used perhaps most often with writers or creative people. For example, many painters are known for having muses, women who inspired them to create artworks and to create specific artworks, same with writers, although maybe less so. Old Hollywood directors who used to always use the same actress, you can say that the actress is a muse, like people used to say that Molly Ringwald was a muse for director John Hughes.
I think that muse originates from Greek mythology
