Breathing hard and breathing heavily are the same, and breathe deeply is inhaling deeply.

I would agree that breathing hard and heavily are similar, but breathing hard is more aggressive if that makes since. If you were to describe someone sleeping you could use breathing heavily but wouldn't use hard. It sound harsh. "They were breathing heavily as the slept" Breathe deeply if more of a peaceful description. The breathing is fuller and more relaxed. "She breathed deeply as she meditated"

@HectorABC "Breathe hard" is like panting while you run, a fast breath. "Breathe heavily" is under duress, but slower like after you finish running. "Breathe deeply" is calm, like when doing Yoga or when trying to relax.

@conconcha So if someone has just stopped running and is exhausted, you would say "He's breathing heavily"?
- English (US)
Yeah! But you could use hard if you wanted.

@HectorABC Yes! But if they only stopped running 2 seconds ago, they might still be breathing hard. You can use either one for that situation! 😊
