@LOZTPX "To join" is the more general term, and it refers to the moment when you first "enter" an activity/group etc.
"I joined my friends and went to the cinema."
"I joined the WhatsApp group chat."
"I joined the party."
Attend is the action of being present to a social event (usually official). It doesn't necessarily mean you did anything other than being a spectator.
"To participate (in)" refers to everything you do during an event. Unlike "attend", it usually means you are a core part of it. It's all of the actions you do until you leave that place/activity.
"I participated in the contest"
"I participated in the project"
"To take part" is a mix of both "to attend" and "to participate". It can mean you either simply were there as a spectator, or that you were actually... participating!

"To attend" means to be present at a social event. Those 2 sentences mean almost the same thing.
To attend a ceremony.

確かに、前者はわざわざ新宿に出向いて飲み会に参加した感じがして、後者は場所はどこでも良かったけど飲み会に参加しに行った感じがしますね。
