There isn't any real difference between how they're used. :)
One might argue that "begin" is a *little bit* more formal than "start," but officially they can both be used in both informal and formal settings.
"Let's start!" vs "Let's begin!"
"Let's start the race!" vs "Let's begin the race!"
"I started falling in love with her a few months ago." vs "I began falling in love with her a few months ago."
