"Cyberbullying" isn't used very often in normal speech. :)
There's nothing inherently wrong with saying "the news won't last long," but it doesn't make literal sense (as once the news is revealed, it's revealed forever).
You might instead say:
[I] hope the news doesn't spread too far, so that David and his family can be spared from any harassment.
or
[I] hope the news doesn't spread too far, so that David and his family can be safe from any harassment.
---
ALSO, some people may argue that this very formal, but this is a perfect opportunity to use the word "lest":
[I] hope the news doesn't spread too far, lest David and his family receive any harassment.
