both are correct, but they mean slightly different things. "Became the top student" means she became number one, with no one better than her.
"A top student" is more like being in a group of top students, the top 5 for example. It's less absolute.

Most people don't care which one you use. It's like why people say "alot" instead of "a lot". According to Google, it should be "hard work".

@Linjieyang I didn't even notice the hyphen vs no hyphen, I thought they were asking about the phrasing of a top student vs the top student!
The answer above is is 100% correct. However, saying "alot" is a quick way to bother some native speakers so beware 😂
