Practically almost there's no difference (if we are talking about similar forms "извиниТЕ" и "простиТЕ" or "извини" и "прости"). "Прости" is some more emotionally than "извини", for example if my wife would know about my adultery I say "прости"; "извини" sounds like "it is little things" in this case

Not quite in this way. In daily life with stranger there is no difference absolutely. You may to say извините, простите, прошу прощения, прошу меня извинить - what you want. But time to time "извини" may be...untimely, impoperly...especially if your talking touches feelings of other.
