No, I had to go to a university in France to study the history of mathematics, which is what I wanted to be the focus of my degree. To help pay my way, I worked in a tutoring center, where I helped people with their English. It was part of their open university system. I helped students and people from various communities in Dijon who wanted to learn English. (We didn't have such history courses anywhere in North America, when I was younger.) I just needed a student visa to do that work in France. I had to have $3,000 in an account for six months to qualify for that visa and I had to pay for a universal health care card, which was only about $250 a year (It covered my medical costs up to 2 million euros. That was right when France switches from the French franc to the euro over 20 years ago. )
