Yes, so, if they talk with me for some time then get to the topic, I understand. But they seem to keep talking idly, they are not interested in teaching me anything or ask me anything about Chinese. They just ask, “what’s your job,” “are you a student,” “what are you doing,” “I feel like marrying you” Those kind of thing. 😓 I just want to be efficient and effective.
So I like this app so much. People don’t have much opportunities to talk about personal things, just focusing on other people’s questions. I don’t need to know what someone’s name is, I just need to post a question, and other people will help me fix it.
And yes, there is some cultural difference as well. Generally, Chinese people are not very interested in conducting small talk with strangers. We don’t feel comfortable saying much or something deep with strangers. I heard from an American that you Americans might talk to your server for a really long time. But in China, customers and servers in a restaurant only say something necessary. So we usually talk to servers less than 3 minutes.
Take me as an example, I’ve never talked with my server over 3 minutes. The server also won’t talk with us too much. 😂 We only feel comfortable talking fun things with friends. So “I refuse to talk idly” that type of thing is very common in China, and other people also understand. We just think: You don’t want to talk with me too much because I’m a stranger to you? That’s so nice because I also don’t want to talk with you because you’re a stranger to me too. 😂
