i think in the UK they mean the same thing. and they technically still do in the US, but for US english ‘mad’ is not normally used to describe someone as crazy or insane like in the UK. it’s used to describe someone as angry. i hope this makes sense

Victoria (the person who answered) makes a good point. I hope the examples I add here will help you use these 2 words in your life:
1. In British English, it's more common to say "Are you mad?" when you're asking someone why they did something weird.
2. In the U.S., when someone does something strange, we would say "Are you crazy??! Don't do that - it's embarrassing!"
