Question about English (US)

What can italicized 'could' usually mean in a sentence like, you COULD calculate it that way but the most popular way to do it is this way? Personally, I'm guessing it just stresses that you can do it, but we don't recommend you to do it. Any other ideas? Thank you in advance for your answers.
