Formal speech is sort of how you would use honorifics in Japanese. I think it is called "Keigo/敬語."
So you would not not use Keigo/
敬語 with your friends or younger siblings.
Casual is not the same as "slang." Slang is a type of language or words used.
Japanese examples of slang from Google:
•ダサい
•ウザい
•やばい
I don't think you would use those slang words when talking to your manager, teacher, or a grandparent. Right? 😂

Formal (appearance):
Dressing in your best clothes, usually for a special occasion.
Example: Clothes you would wear for a wedding or a job interview
Formal (speech):
Speaking with respect, without slang.
Example: The way you talk to someone older than you, teachers, a manager...
