It is not easy to explain the difference briefly. If you really want to know the difference, you will need to read a thick grammar book.
As you may know, は comes right after "theme" while が does "subject" as a basic rule. In many cases, however, the English translation would be the same...but we, native speakers know when to use which naturally.
