Question about English (US)

Hi, I want to ask you about excuses. I delayed submitting my assignment, and I looked up how should I say in the message for my teacher. (She is from the State, and I didn't know what should I say)It says you should write what makes you delay your submission and as an example, โ€œ I was busy with a part-time job and did not have much time to complete it.โ€ Here, if you said such a thing, people who received it will probably think โ€œwhy do you have to say that excuse to me?โ€ Do you write excuses when writing apologies to teachers?
