The article isn’t mandatory here as the user above pointed out.
Definite articles usually can be omitted when there’s already an implication that the noun they’re determining represents a particular instance of something. So you could either say “odeio o meu pai” or “odeio meu pai”, both would be grammatical and mean exactly the same thing. The article makes it just a little bit more emphatic, but doesn’t add any meaning to the sentence.
