Subordinating conjunctions: because, although
Conjunctive adverbs: therefore, however
You have to have two connected ideas in a sentence when you use a subordinating conjunction. A conjunctive adverb can be used with one idea in a sentence.
"I am happy because it is my birthday"
"Although it is raining, I am happy."
"It is my birthday. Therefore, I am happy."
"It is raining. However, I am happy."
