Question about English (US)

How do you say this in English (US)? Plz let me know if i sound awkward or unnatural.
Today, it looked like rain, so i took a umbrella. You know better safe than sorry. But it's not looked like that heavy rain, so i just took a small umbrella. Eventually when i amlost got around my college.

But it's not heavy rain, so this was good enough. But I don't think i don't need to put up an umbrella. I knew it. Better safe than sorry. I could see who some people have no umbrell, so they run and hide their hair with hands.
