It's used to emphasize a change from "not happened" to "happened" at a given time:
Ya he comido (I've already eaten).
Ya verás como la segunda vez te gusta más (you'll see how the second time it pleases you more)
Ya no te quiero (I dont love you anymore).
We also use it a lot as agreement (in Spain at least):
A: Este restaurante es muy bueno.
B: Ya! (Yeah, you are right)

In Spain, when we say "I'm coming", we say: Ya voy!
Here ya means right now, it always indicates a change
