Question about United Kingdom

Hello. I have a question about the unique way to pay electric bills that I've seen in the British movie, 'A Gift From Bob (2020)'.
In one scene, James Bowen went to the grocery store to charge his pre-paid "electricity card" when he found that his electricity was cut off because of unpaid bills. As far as I remember, after he charged about 20 pounds in the store, he inserted the charged card into the fuse box in his place. I thought electric bills are always paid later in most countries, so it looked really interesting to me.
Is this way (using electricity card and paying electric bills by charging the card) popular in the UK? Do many British people use electricity cards to pay electricity?
