Question about English (US)

I was watching a tv show called “Forensic Files” on YouTube when at some point of the episode the announcer said: “Bill and his estranged wife were good friends until what was about to happen that night….”

Does “estranged” mean that she was Bill’s ex wife? If so why to say that way?
