Question about English (US)

What does the phrasal verb 'take on' mean?
I heard a sentence watching Clash of Clans(a mobile game) Youtube channel.
"He is gonna release his barbarian king to take on the archer tower and the mortar... "
I guess that means 'to destroy'.
Is that right?
