Question about English (US)

How do you say this in English (US)? Hello, Natives, can you please explain one sentence below for me?

"However, this is not necessarily the best practice, and some advocate for challenging gifted students within their year group."

In this sentence, does advocate 'for' sound natural to you guys? or is it better to use just advocate without 'for'?

Thanks always bros and sisters
