What is the difference between encumber and impede ?Feel free to just provide example sentences.
What is the difference between encumber and impede ?Feel free to just provide example sentences.
e.g.
"Work on the building was impeded by severe weather."
"Work on the building was encumbered by severe weather."
I know this is a bit of a tricky question, but are these two terms interchangeable?

@IxIxu not exactly interchangeable.. to impede something means to completely stop something or someone from doing something. Meanwhile, encumbered means to make something more difficult. In the example you gave, work on the building being impeded by the severe weather means that they physically can not work on the building because of the severe weather. In the second one, work on the building was encumbered by the severe weather, means that work on the building is harder to do or more inconvenient because of the weather. However, work could still be done on the building, it would just be more inconvenient. I like to think of like the negation words in korean. 안 가요 means I won’t go, and 못 가요 means I can’t go. You get it? 안 is like encumbered and 못 is like impeded. I hope this helps!☺️
