Question about English (US)

Can I say "learn FROM" in this context?

- Besides, taking pictures can be distracting. I remember when I was in high school, my teacher often took us to art galleries and didn't allow us to take pictures, so we could focus on exhibits themselves and learn【from】them.

Would Americans say "take photographs"? like:
- ...my teacher often took us to art galleries and didn't allow us to take【photographs】, so we could focus on exhibits themselves…
