Question about Korea, Republic Of
—I think we would all agree that education is valuable and critical to a successful happy life. But why, in your opinion, does Korea seem to place education above( or more important than) health and family life and any pursuits besides by having 15 hour school days and 학원 that is pushed late into the night along with suicidal levels of stress for testing etc.

Korea is a country that lacks resources geographically.
So Koreans had to invest heavily in human resources and the result would have been over-competition
Historically, I suspect that there is a cause for the status system called 양천제(Yangcheonje).
In Joseon Dynasty, the status of the people was largely divided into two, 양인(Yangin) and 천민(Cheonmin). 양인 means a good citizen and 천민 means a low citizen.
And 양인 has higher society status than 천민, but there were not nobles.
Only those who passed the examination among the 양인 could become nobles.
And this noble's status only lasted up to three generations. so they should pass examination again again if they stay nobles. The way to become an noble for hundreds of years was to study hard and pass the examination.
i guess it can infuluence

Resources are limited, so everyone is desperate.Korea's best universities ranked 29th on the QS, showing how scarce educational resources are.Of course not only Korea, but also all non-English speaking countries have this problem, that's why many people want to study in the United Kingdom and the United States and even settle down.

@RMfantastic oh thank you for your answer! What do you mean by educational resources? How are they scarce?

@morganmichelle0423 yea.. isn't it so sad? it makes me so miserable to admit the fact that Korea is in such an old-fashioned and terrible education system... I'm teaching English kids in an academy but thankfully this Academy isn't as extreme as other academies so.. I like it..
hope is we are changing this ingrained education system.. I guess the speed is pretty slow but we try to do some more stuff that can push kids creativity or the skills that genuinely need in the current society.. which isn't just staying at schools nor memorizing/cramming!!
thanks for your attention to our education system.. 🙏 I wonder what got you interested in this serious issue!!

Oh cool! I am hoping to teach English to Koreans as well! I thought learning to speak Korean would help the students!
I admire Korean peoples dedication. They seem very very smart and accomplished people. It seems like a country that prioritizes social standing and success.
But I realized with the level of perfection that is required mental health is often looked over. The suicide rates have always saddened me in Korea whether it be in K-pop or high-school students. The humans themselves and their mental health seems unacknowledged because meeting the standards are more important 😔
But that is good to know! I hope that people’s individuality becomes valued and their creativity can be expressed!

@morganmichelle0423 I'd like to look at studying hard with respect to businesses. People need money to make a living, and it's normally good to have enough money though it's not a necessity for happiness. In Korea, a conglomerate like Samsung or LG gives decent moeny to them. However, the openings are limited, making the businesses pay attention to the applicants' resumes. Unless they are approved by the company, the job seekers can't get an interview in person. Hence, not only university students but also students are studying very hard; they can face the reality in their early life from their teachers, parents, and friends. Of course, there are some people who voluntarily study hard to chase their dreams and follow their heart. However, it's not common in Korea yet. Overall, the structure of the society has driven them to do so.

No one can and will welcome such a method. It's just not acceptable. I had a case recently, I needed to write an article, I found controversial essays, used https://studymoose.com/essay-types/controversia... to do it. All because I felt like I was burned out. I didn't feel like doing it and I was tired. In Korea, I heard that no one cares. That's what happens in Japan too, the horror.

@magdalenahomshertyk yes😔 very sad. Hopefully the younger generation will be able to grow to change this problem that so many have suffered from and been affected by🙏🏻
