Haha no problem, I’m sorry I misunderstood—there is no difference to my ear, both are appropriate. “May” is a little more formal sounding, if I had to choose one.

“Polite” is much more common, and if someone is polite, then they are nice and follow the rules of society. “Unobtrusive” to me is someone who doesn’t get in the way. When you don’t offend people, and avoid confrontation, then you are unobtrusive.
