遅れそうな時は事故にあいそう←意味は通じますが、やや不自然です。
遅れそうな時ほど、焦って事故に遭うかも知れない。の方が自然かと思います。
また、少し意味合いが違うかもしれませんが、ことわざで
「急(いそ)がば回(まわ)れ」という言葉があります。
急いで危険な道を選ぶのではなく、遠回りでも安全な道を選ぶ方が結果よいという意味です。

もし運転する方に伝えるなら、
「安全運転でね」
などですかね。
