Your sentence is good! i understand it. it’s just fixing the punctuation.
maybe try:
I left the water running while I was brushing my teeth; what a waste.
or
I left the water running while I was brushing my teeth- what a waste.
or
I left the water running while I was brushing my teeth. What a waste.
