"To look for" means you are physically and actively trying to literally "look" for where it is. For instance, going around different places to see if it is where it should be.
"I tried to figure out where it is" means that you have been "thinking" of where it might be.
"To figure out" means to think thoroughly about something.

"I have been trying to figure out where you were!" - the speaker (stationary) thinking very hard to find you.

@joe1888 You can actually use both in trying to find/look for something as you can think and act in the same situation. To use "to look for" or "to figure out" is more about specifying the behaviour you're doing.
