@airymountain The thing is, the playing cards themselves, all of them collectively, are called "trump" (not even "trump cards", just "torampu") in Japan.
"Let's play a card game" in Japanese is essentially "Let's do some trump"
...even if it's a game with no "trump cards", as we say in English.
It's a loan word that got blown up into something bigger than the original word.

Yes in the US as well, in some card games "trump" cards are stronger than other cards. This has been true for many many years.
