From the following sentence:

I know one couple 'in which' the husband, Michael, is the breadwinner.

I've been taught that 'which' is used to give additional information about a word. But from the sentence above, Could you explain why they used 'in which' instead of 'which'?
And would it sound natural if I replaced 'in which' with 'which'
