From the following sentence:
I know one couple 'in which' the husband, Michael, is the breadwinner.
I've been taught that 'which' is used to give additional information about a word. But from the sentence above, Could you explain why they used 'in which' instead of 'which'?
And would it sound natural if I replaced 'in which' with 'which'

You use "in which" because Michael is part of the couple, not the entire couple. He is "in" the couple.
It would be incorrect to say "I know one couple which the husband, Michael, is the breadwinner."
California is a state in which there are many vineyards.
Here is an orchard in which there are many types of apples.
