They mean pretty much the same thing but I’ve never heard somebody say “unnerve” before as it’s a bit uncommon to see I guess. Discourage is definitely a lot more natural at least to what I’ve seen.

There is a bit of difference in these two words, but they do have the same meaning in this context.
"unnerve" means to make someone lose their "nerve" (confidence).
"discourage" means to "encourage" someone or something to stop doing something. It is negative encouragement.
If you are talking about trying to get someone to stop trying, both of these words can be used. They are not always interchangeable, however.

certain about something =/= confident about something
I can be certain about something, but not confident enough to act.
"I'm certain that I need to stand up to my boss, but I'm too scared to do it."
