Are you saying that you are in first place (you have the lead)?
Or
Are you saying that you are covering first position (position number one) and others are covering second position, third position, and so on?

You would use "the first position", if you were speaking to someone who has never placed the game before, and you are pointing out directly to him where it located.
Here's another example of these two usages:
I am going to church. (You don't need the word, the, because which church doesn't matter.)
I go to THE church at the end of the street. (You're showing the person which church in particular that you attend.)
