No, I'm referring to another idiom... I've heard it this morning on the radio. Maybe nobody uses it!!

When something hits the dust we are saying that the thing we are talking about has failed miserably. For example, a project at work which failed to produce the intended results and has been axed (ie discontinued).
It is very similar to something biting the dust, which perhaps has stronger force in that it means something has died, most likely in a spectacular way.
