First, most hwarang are not considered heroes. The purpose of the hwarang was to gather and manage human resources or to train soldiers (mostly became management), so it is rarely treated as a great person. When there were not enough soldiers in the war, they fought as student soldiers, but it was extremely rare. In the case of the wonhwa, it is less famous than the hwarang. Also, there is not much historical information left compared to the hwarang. well It was 1400 years ago so.. In the case of paintings, the hwarangdo is famous. In the case of a book-like story, there is a story about the hwarang gwanchang. This story is famous in Korea, so I recommend you to look it up.

Since 화랑 and 원화 were the organization/figures of 신라, they were admired by only 신라 people. To the people from other two rival countries 백제 and 고구려, 화랑 were probably just brave, pretty teenage boys.
The most famous Korean history book that tells about 화랑 would be 삼국사기 published in 1145 by 김부식. But I don't know if it has an English version.
No well-known 화랑도 comes to my mind at the moment but you can refer to the picture painted in the 6th century by a Chinese painter in the link below to guess how 신라 men(the first picture) looked. Maybe he doesn't look particularly handsome from a modern perspective, but if you compare him with others from other countries, you'll see he looks "better".

Are you Italian? Some universities like 시에나 외국인 대학교, 나폴리 대학교, 로마 사피엔자 대학교, 베네치아 카포스카리 대학교 have a Korean major. I guess you'll be able to find more detailed data about them written in Italian if you contact the Korean department in the universities. (Only if you're interested)
