文章の中で名詞として使う「～すること」という意味の単語のことです。
形としては「-ing」で終わるものですが、「～して」「～している」というのと意味も使い方も違います。
例）
Some people enjoy music. → 音楽を楽しく思う人もいる。
Some people enjoy nature. → 大自然を楽しく思う人もいる。
Some people enjoy writing essays. → 論文を書くのを楽しく思う人もいる。
ここで言うwritingとういのは、論文を「書いて」どうするとか、論文を「書いている」とかいう話ではなく、
論文を「書くこと」です。
「書く」という動詞と直接関係してはいるが、文の中の役割として music や nature のような名詞に代わって使っているだけあって、名詞の一種になっています。ｌ
余談ですが、英訳してほしいという質問以外は、テンプレ・メニューの一番下にある空白のものを使うといいですよ。
